Terms of Engagement

Growing up I had two primary examples of marriage, that of my parents and my paternal grandparents. By any sane standards, you’d have to call my parents’ marriage pathetic, although my grandparents had a perfect one. I decided that someday I would go the route of my grandparents, but not until I was at least thirty years old as I had too many things to accomplish before settling down. I was probably around ten at the time.

Three years later — yes, at the tender age of thirteen — I had my first engagement. My puppy love, first boyfriend, George, asked me to marry him, and I said, “Yes.”

He bought me a ring from the Ben Franklin 5 and Dime store, and we started saving money in a mason jar for our wedding. Two years later I changed my mind, but I let him keep our savings account.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it, but engagement number two happened with a man whose name has been lost in history to me. Only seventeen by this time, once again I changed my mind.

After engagement number two, I decided that I wouldn’t date anyone for more than six months unless I knew they were The One, and I made this very clear to my suiters. That decision would backfire on me seven more times over the course of the next thirty or so years.
