Celebration

The girls each woke and joined us in the kitchen, both of them ready and willing to participate in our crawfish boil. We washed potatoes, broke corn on the cob, sliced sausages and cut up lemons. As our water came to a rolling boil we dropped in the potatoes, then the corn, then the sausage, all the while squeezing more lemons into the pot. After about half an hour the pot was ready for the main dish … live crawfish. We dumped the critters into the pot and covered it with a lid. Five minutes later we had a feast fit for a king in our pot.

We poured the food out onto a counter top covered in a giant tin foil bowl. When we were done, we had enough food to feed ten hungry people, maybe more. We felt truly blessed this Saturday afternoon with family, friends, and plenty of good food. We made up paper plates mounted with our feast and small bowls of drawn butter for dipping the crawfish, then made our way into the living room to our giant dark wood coffee table. I don’t think any of us said a word for the first ten minutes after we sat down, each of us deep in the yummy process of popping off tails and eating them.

After we filled our bellies, we headed out to the casino, Brandi, Kelly, and I all ready for penny slot machines. They call me the Slot Whisperer, but I didn’t live up to my reputation that afternoon. Brandi and I each lost a bit of money, and Kelly Nichols left just forty-five cents up. The only one of us who did any good was Nick at the blackjack tables, and he kicked ass and took names.

After the casino we headed back to the house and stayed up late watching Netflix. We were all a bit tuckered out from a full day of cooking, eating, and gambling, so we went to bed early. As I went upstairs my head filled with thoughts of what we would do on our last day together and came up with a pretty good plan.
